The hook shot is caused by hitting the ball with a closed club face. This will make the ball spin counterclockwise, making the ball curve. The faster the ball curves the more severe the hook. The ideal club position at impact is a square club face. the square club face does not point either left or right it is neutral.
One of the first places to look to fix a golf hook is your grip. To check and see if your grip is correct, while addressing the ball, you need to be able to see at least two knuckles on your left hand. If you see more than two knuckles, you are not holding the club properly. The proper grip is a neutral grip, not to strong or weak.
Take your normal grip, then look to make sure the club is square, if your grip is wrong the club face will close at impact. If you think your grip is fine, have a playing partner or club pro, look at your grip and setup to see if this where your problem lies. You may be reluctant to change your grip, because you do not think that is the problem, but have an open mind if you want to correct the hook.
Another tip to fix a golf hook is to make sure you remain balanced throughout your swing. Your weight should remain on the balls of your feet, if you get back on your heels, your swing will get out of sync and cause you to possibly hook the ball. Your hips should flow smoothly through your swing, while transferring your weight from one foot to the other.
You must also keep your left arm stiff through out your swing. This will help to keep the club face square at impact. If you happen to bend your left arm, this will cause you to close the club face at impact. Again, have a playing partner or club pro watch your swing to give you proper feedback.
Above all, go through these suggestions and practice them, making minor adjustments as needed. As you correct each area you will start to see more straight shots.Just keep practicing and be patient. See you on the course!
