Hit Your Drives Straight

One of the keys to hit your drives straight is being able to control your driver. The driver is the longest club in the bag and therefore  the hardest club to control. Although the driver is the hardest club to control, it can be the most rewarding club, when it is hit properly. It takes practice and determination to master your driver.

To be considered a successful drive  off of the tee, your ball must fly low without a lot of spin, and roll a long ways when it lands. If your ball has a lot of spin off of the tee, the ball will either slice or hook a little or a lot, depending on the amount of spin and the direction of the spin.

If you want to hit your drives straight you have to understand the importance of leverage to your drives. You must keep your head behind the ball to achieve proper leverage through your entire swing.

To achieve greater distance you must generate more club head speed. Club head speed  is generated through your legs and hips. Learn to use these body parts to generate speed and power. If you just try to use your arms to power your shots you will have a lot of  wild shots, you must remain consistent in your swing.

You need to keep your club on  a low swing plane  during the backswing. If you are to steep on your backswing, you will probably end up slicing the ball.

If you want to hit your drives straight, you need to make sure that your wrist break at impact, I don’t mean actually break, but snap forward at impact. This will give you added distance and control, when you learn how to do it properly. Make sure that you follow through completely on your drives.

You also need to check how  tightly you are holding the club. You do not want to hold the club to tightly, this will cause a lot of swing flaws. Just grip the club lightly and free up your wrists. This will give you the freedom to swing through fully and completely. Check to make sure you are able see  two or three knuckles when you are addressing the ball.

You will also need to have a good steady swing tempo. You will learn your proper tempo on the practice range. Its not the same for every golfer. If you are slicing the ball, you may be coming over the top or maybe even trying to swing to hard.

Another great swing tip to hit your drives straight is to check your divots. by examining your divots you can tell if you are pushing or pulling the ball. If your divot is not straight, your alignment is probably off.  You need to make sure your body is in line with your target at address.

The best tip we can give you, is to just keep at and practice. This is the only way you are going to get better.
