You should have someone watch you or better yet film you, during your swing, to see what you are doing wrong. We will go over a couple of the most common reasons golfers hit the ball fat.

The first thing you need to look at in your swing is that you probably are dropping your rear shoulder during your downswing. This causes the club head to drop and then strike the ground just before hitting the ground. This will also happen if you try to swing the club to hard. When swinging to hard, many golfers will flex there knees more on the downswing, thus changing the arc of the club and causing the club head to strike the ground too early. If you want to stop hitting the ball fat, you must maintain a steady swing tempo.

You must also try to keep the club on the same swing plane, a steady swing tempo will also promote this. As part of your pre-shot routine, try a slow and steady swing, concentrate on keeping the club on the same swing plane, from your backswing all the way through your follow through.

Proper swing mechanics is essential to stop hitting the ball fat,as well as preventing many other swing problems. You need to start your backswing with your left arm (for right handed golfers) straight all the way through your swing. Make sure your lower body starts your downswing, to ensure this, pause slightly at the tp of your backswing, then start uncoiling your hips, before allowing your arms and shoulders to whip around.

If you want to stop hitting the ball fat,you need to practice. Hit the practice range and work on your swing mechanics. Have a trusted playing partner, watch your swing and give you pointers. This can be invaluable to help you cure you swing problems.

You will also want to practice with all your clubs. Hitting the ball fat can occur with any club in your bag. It will not do you any good to practice with just one club.
